People Management for Newly Appointed Registered Managers

Practical people-management skills for managers stepping into a Registered Manager role

Becoming a Registered Manager brings significant responsibility for both the quality of the service and the people who deliver care.

This practical course helps newly appointed Registered Managers develop the confidence and skills to lead teams, manage performance and conduct, support staff wellbeing, handle employee relations issues and build a positive, accountable workplace culture.

Designed specifically for CQC-registered services, the course connects effective people management with safe, effective and well-led care.

What will the course cover?

  • Leading people effectively – establishing authority, professional boundaries, clear expectations and consistent management practices
  • Workplace culture – creating respectful, supportive and accountable teams and recognising early signs of unhealthy or closed cultures
  • Performance and conduct – managing underperformance, behavioural concerns and difficult conversations
  • Staffing and competence – supervision, appraisal, development, staff suitability and addressing competence concerns
  • Employee relations – managing conflict, grievances, complaints and other workplace issues appropriately
  • Staff wellbeing – supporting staff while maintaining appropriate management boundaries and accountability
  • Speaking up and concerns – responding appropriately to concerns, encouraging openness and supporting a positive safety culture
  • Governance and accountability – maintaining appropriate records, learning from incidents and understanding when concerns need to be escalated

CQC connections

The course considers the relevance of key CQC regulations, including:

  • Regulation 7 – Registered Managers
  • Regulation 10 – Dignity and respect
  • Regulation 12 – Safe care and treatment
  • Regulation 13 – Safeguarding
  • Regulation 16 – Complaints
  • Regulation 17 – Good governance
  • Regulation 18 – Staffing
  • Regulation 19 – Fit and proper persons employed
  • Regulation 20 – Duty of candour

The emphasis is on applying these requirements to everyday people-management practice, rather than simply learning the regulations.

By the end of the course, delegates will have greater confidence to:

✓ Lead and manage staff effectively

✓ Set clear expectations and professional standards

✓ Manage performance, conduct and competence concerns

✓ Hold difficult conversations constructively

✓ Support staff wellbeing while maintaining accountability

✓ Handle employee relations issues appropriately

✓ Encourage staff to speak up and raise concerns

✓ Promote consistency, fairness and positive workplace culture

✓ Understand key CQC requirements relevant to people management

✓ Maintain appropriate management records and evidence

✓ Recognise when concerns require escalation or further advice

A practical, manager-focused course

Through realistic scenarios, discussion and practical examples, delegates will explore the people-management situations they are likely to encounter as Registered Managers and consider how to respond appropriately and consistently.

Who is it for?

Newly appointed Registered Managers, Deputy Managers preparing for the role, and managers who have recently taken responsibility for a CQC-registered service.
