Closed Cultures for Leaders

Recognising warning signs, strengthening leadership and creating a culture where people feel safe to speak up

A healthy workplace culture is essential to safe, effective and person-centred care. This practical course helps leaders recognise the warning signs of a closed or unhealthy culture and take action before poor practices become embedded.

Designed for CQC-registered health and social care services, the course explores how leadership behaviour, communication, staff attitudes, governance and responses to concerns can influence workplace culture and the quality of care.

What will the course cover?

  • Understanding closed and unhealthy workplace cultures
  • Recognising warning signs such as poor communication, cliques, reluctance to challenge and staff being discouraged from speaking up
  • Creating an open, inclusive and accountable workplace culture
  • Leading by example and setting clear expectations for professional behaviour
  • Responding appropriately when staff raise concerns
  • Supporting speaking up, professional challenge and escalation
  • Identifying patterns in complaints, incidents, concerns and staff feedback
  • Using concerns and feedback to support learning and improvement
  • Protecting dignity, respect, safety and people’s rights
  • Understanding the links between culture, leadership, governance and quality of care

CQC Focus

The course considers relevant CQC expectations, including Well-led, Freedom to speak up, Learning culture and Governance, management and sustainability, alongside relevant regulations including Regulations 10, 12, 17, 18 and 20.

Practical Learning

Realistic health and social care scenarios help delegates explore how they would respond when staff are reluctant to speak up, concerns are repeatedly raised without action, poor practice becomes normalised, or leaders face difficult challenges about workplace culture.

Who is it for?

Registered Managers, Deputy Managers, Service Managers, Team Leaders, Supervisors and other leaders responsible for managing people, culture, quality and safety within CQC-registered services.

What will delegates gain?

Delegates will develop greater confidence in recognising cultural risks, responding to concerns, challenging poor practice, strengthening accountability and creating a workplace where speaking up, learning and continuous improvement are part of everyday practice.
