Whistleblowing & Speaking Up for Frontline Workers

Recognising concerns, knowing how to speak up and contributing to a safe and open culture

Frontline workers are often the first to notice poor practice, unsafe care, inappropriate behaviour or other concerns within a service. However, speaking up can feel difficult, particularly when concerns involve colleagues or senior staff.

Whistleblowing & Speaking Up for Frontline Workers is a practical course that helps frontline staff understand when, how and where to raise concerns about care, safety, poor practice or wrongdoing.

The course develops confidence in speaking up appropriately, communicating concerns clearly and understanding what may happen after a concern is raised.

What will the course cover?

  • Understanding speaking up and whistleblowing
  • Recognising poor practice, unsafe care and potential safeguarding concerns
  • Knowing who to approach when a concern arises
  • Communicating concerns clearly, factually and professionally
  • Understanding confidentiality and appropriate information sharing
  • Knowing what to expect after raising a concern
  • Raising concerns about colleagues or senior staff appropriately
  • Understanding what to do if a concern is not addressed
  • Recognising when concerns may need to be escalated
  • Contributing to an open and positive workplace culture
  • Learning from concerns to support safer and better care

CQC Relevance

The course supports understanding of CQC expectations around Freedom to Speak Up and the importance of an open culture where staff feel able to raise concerns.

It also explores how speaking up contributes to safe care and treatment (Regulation 12), good governance (Regulation 17), effective staffing (Regulation 18) and, where relevant, openness and transparency under the Duty of Candour (Regulation 20).

Practical Workplace Scenarios

Delegates will explore realistic situations involving poor care, unsafe practices, medication concerns, safeguarding, inappropriate staff behaviour, inaccurate records and concerns about colleagues.

They will consider what they have observed, who they should approach, how to communicate the concern and what to do if the issue is not appropriately addressed.
